Tired but Happy

It's that time of the year. Fall always heats up. Starting in mid-to-late September, it begins to feel like an ever-accelerating roller coaster right up through New Year's. The calendar goes from busy to crammed. The nights of sleep get shorter. Eating a calm dinner at home with Husband becomes the rarest of pleasures. It shouldn't be fun, but it kind of is. Summer sucks my energy completely away. The slower schedule, the open calendar, the lazy heat, all conspire to make me a really ineffective human being. It just isn't my time of year. And by August, I'm down-right sick of it. So somehow the mayhem of fall doesn't really bother me much. In fact, I look forward to it! Sure, sometimes I would give a lot for an hour to just be still and read, but I much prefer the organized chaos of fall to the lethargy of sickly-hot summer. And summers are just that at Brandy Hall...HOT!

Speaking of hot, though, mother nature has been a bit confused. Temps have topped 90 degrees for the last several days, with a considerable amount of humidity. In October?! Thankfully, we're cooling back off this week. But it's been positively strange. And it's made me feel sticky and sleepy. May we please have some fall weather since it's, um, FALL? Thank you!

So, lots going on! Husband's parents visited us this past weekend. A football game in our home-town stadium (the Illini beat Wisconsin...unbelievable!), lots of baseball on TV (too bad, Cubbies, I was rooting for you...go Red Sox!), and some delicious meals out at local restaurants filled our days. Everyone came to church with me on Sunday, and Dad-in-law and Husband sang in my tenor section. It was such a pleasure to have them both. Mom-in-law cheered us on from the congregation. My folks are visiting from D.C. next weekend, so we've got back-to-back parents visits. It's really fun, though. We don't get a lot of visitors, and it's always such a treat to get to spend time with our families.

This week Husband has a conference, a concert, and a weekend filled with school activities as all the online students in his program come together on campus for a couple of days. I have all my usual stuff (church choir rehearsal, Amasong rehearsal) plus a performance with Amasong at our local Chautaqua festival next weekend. Oh yeah, and working full time! And parents visiting! Very full but fun days!

Recommendation of the day: see the film Paris, je t'aime. It is actually a collection of 20 short films, each one 5 minutes, but a variety of directors and starring actors both well-known and unknown. We saw it last week in a French film festival that a friend of ours helped to mount here in our little double-town of Shampoo-Banana. It is amazing. You go from tears to hysterical laughing to being totally enthralled and all over again throughout the 20 films. Most of the shorts are worthwhile, some are profound. All have to do with different aspects of Paris. I highly recommend this film (or films). Hopefully it is out on DVD, or will be soon.

Happy October! Happy B-day Dad and SF, both of whom had b-days yesterday. And many happy returns to the both of you!

Try to enjoy the frantic fun of autumn. And get a little sleep if you can. ;-)
